With spring break just past, and the summer vacation season soon upon us, all I can seem to think about lately is getting on a plane. While I have my own favourite vacation spots--and places I dearly wish to visit--I thought it would be great to have a little travel fun every Thursday and find out the places that other bloggers have fallen in love with and their vacation essentials.
The first guest blogger in this series is the lovely Erika of Café Fashionista. I adore her blog for her fabulous fashion finds and her recommendations for cafés across the globe (which combines two of my main passions--travel and coffee!) Read on to find out about a few of Erika's vacation favourites...
Favourite Vacation Spot
I’m sure that everyone who knows me even the tiniest bit knows what my answer to this is going to be, but…New York City. Given the fact that I don’t live there (someday, hopefully!), the next best thing is vacationing there!
Where to Stay
The Plaza. Luxurious, I know; but I’m obsessed with Kay Thompson’s Eloise, and have forever wanted to stay there. Though I will admit that I adore the hipster vibe of Brooklyn/Williamsburg/Park Slope/East Village, so I’d definitely be open to staying somewhere in one of those locations. Even better, hop from place to place during my stay in New York City; that way you get to experience a multitude of settings in one trip!
Where to Eat
I’m more of a snacker myself, so I don’t typically look for restaurants where I’ll receive a full meal – rather, a dessert here, a cup of coffee there. I love B Cup Café in the East Village and Red Horse Café in Park Slope. Also, I’m ever so slightly obsessed with Sweetiepie Restaurant which is more geared towards the younger crowd (i.e. elementary school kids), but the ambiance is the cutest thing ever – plus, where else can you get 18 scoops of ice cream a la the Sweetiepig dessert? Then, standard, of course – frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity, and, my personal favorite, Dylan’s Candy Bar. Obviously my “where to eats” cater to satisfying one’s sweet tooth!
What to Do
I’m not really into the whole tourist thing; I kind of like just experiencing everything as it comes my way, but…I always have to visit Alice in Wonderland (the statue/sculpture) in Central Park and Strawberry Fields. Also, since I love music, I find that Brooklyn/Williamsburg, again, is the best place to find amazing indie sounds. Music Hall of Williamsburg and The Bell House are really cool venues; and if you’re in NYC during the summer, you cannot miss the various concerts in the park (Prospect Park, Washington Square, Central…)
Five Vacation Essentials
iPod, BlackBerry, lipgloss, comfortable (yet cute!) shoes, a medium-sized crossbody bag.
Vaction Clothing Staples
Since you’re navigating a location that you might not be completely familiar with, I always say bring the following: leggings, tunics, crossbody bags, ballerina flats, riding boots, comfortable wedges. What’s perfect about these items is that they work for any type of weather, and are resilient enough to allow you to move around comfortably – plus, you look effortlessly glamorous; and there’s nothing more fabulous than that! As for the crossbody bag…don’t ever travel without one – they allow you to carry what you need whilst giving you free hands!
Place any extra pairs of shoes that you may be bringing with you in Ziploc bags before putting them in your suitcase – you do not want a dirty sole to leave stains on your clothes during travel.
What I Bring for the Journey...
iPod. I get motion sickness, so I can’t really read when I travel; therefore, my iPod is my favorite traveling companion. I like the idea of just getting lost in the music – before you know it you’ve reached your final destination. Just make sure you have the battery charged before you depart!
Favourite Travelling Companion
I like to travel in small groups – as in with just one or two other people. I find that it’s fun to navigate unknown areas with just one or two really close friends/family members. I don’t have any one favorite traveling companion; I think it really depends on the destination, and what my plans are for the trip.
The Next Spot I'd Like to Visit...
Chicago. As you can probably tell, I love the vibe of cities. I have heard such amazing things about Chicago…I’d definitely like to visit there; namely Wicker Park. A blogger I love – Sara Lynn from She is Sara blogged about the eclectic/hipster vibe of Wicker Park not too long ago…I’m determined to go there now!!
