Mock Furs - 1958

In the late 1950s and into the early 60s, mock furs (or faux furs as we call them today) were promoted as a less expensive alternative to costly real furs. I think you can tell from these photos, however, that the quality of the mock fur fabrics available were far inferior to those we have today. But it is interesting to see the styles that were available and even more interesting to see how expensive these coats were!! These photos are all from 1958.

Above, a mock wolf fur pullover ski top by John Weitz in Borg Dynel shaggy faux fur. Top sold in 1958 for $55 (about $418 in today's dollar.)

Murry Neiman mock seal fur coat in Orlon faux fur. Coat sold in 1958 for $145 (about $1100 in today's dollar.)

Vera Maxwell mock mink evening coat made from Candalon "Wink" fabric. Coat sold in 1958 for $130 (about $988 in today's dollar.)

Custom Craft mock Persian lamb jacket made of wool. Jacket sold in 1958 for $40 (about $304 in today's dollar.)

. . . have always held a special fondness for velvet, and especially tufted velvet, {and anything tufted, really}, and as the bright late-autumn days drift slowly into long winter nights, there is a longing for decadently warm and elegantly luxurious textures -- golden velvet against driftwood and snow-white faux fur beautifully intermingled with crystal droplets falling from silver candelabras and glittering as shooting stars on a crisp november night . . .

. . . when you combine the work of a fashion photographer and an interiors photographer, there is magic in the air, and an intermingling of intricately carved headboards and patent leather peeptoes, cranberry-coloured satin and sexy tousled hair, warm wool blankets and beaded gowns with velvet sashes, and all enveloped in warm and woodsy late-autumn tones of red wine and ripe cranberries, just in time for the holidays . . .

. . . afternoons are still wonderfully bright, but evenings are beginning to arrive earlier, and with them, a surprising briskness to unaccustomed summer skin, and already this past weekend, faux fur stoles and soft cashmere scarves and the longing for luxuriously warm textures, velvet and tweed and satin-trimmed coverlets -- and even warmer hues and tones, featherstone and champagne and deliriously lovely shades of dusky taupe . . .

. . . early autumn days always bring back thoughts of overwhelmingly cozy and welcoming rooms like the ones by manhattan-based interior designer tom scheerer -- overflowing in natural elements of wood and wicker, and luxurious textures of fur and velvet, a warm & woodsy palette steeped in a wonderfully relaxed modernism, and best of all, always beautiful and classic pieces such as the insanely stylish white and gold four poster bed made for dreaming of september sunsets . . .
