I wanted to post this yesterday when the news came out, but I am trying to temper my enthusiasm for this blog a bit so as not to overwhelm my dear readers.
To my complete surprise and delight, the NYTimes announced yesterday that Audrey Niffenegger has a new book coming out! "Her Fearful Symmetry" should arrive in September. I have been waiting with bated breath for this woman to publish another book. After six years, my patience is finally being rewarded.
"The Time Traveler's Wife," Niffenegger's debut novel, floored me. Initially, the story is difficult to follow due to shifting perspectives, times and locations (all part of the brilliant plot), but it unfolds into an incredibly engaging and deeply moving tale.
I wept as I read the final chapter.
I understand that not everyone agrees with my assessment, but 1.3 million paperback copy sales can't be wrong... Acknowledging the naysayers, her agent told the Times:
“There were lots of people who dismissed the first book because it sounded like romance or science fiction or said because it sold so well, it can’t be good. The thing she has control over is writing a great book. She did it once, and she’s done it again.”
In these terrible economic times when many publishing houses are no longer accepting manuscripts, this is wonderful news. I CANNOT wait.
To the AN fans out there: Did you know she's also a visual artist and on faculty at Columbia College Chicago? Amazing.
Fondly,
Cxx.
