{auld lang syne}
. . . even before the clock strikes midnight, already a nostalgia for the year we leave behind, {although suppose it is always that way with good-byes} . . . and yet, few things are lovelier than the overwhelming excitement and perfect anticipation for the days and months that lay ahead . . . and there are still so many things left to discover, words left unspoken, and plans to be made, there are new places to travel and dreams left to dream . . .
so let's raise a glass to the past, to no regrets and springtime in paris, to red lipstick and pink champagne, to art and architecture and the kindness of strangers, to meeting again and to friends, to morning cups of coffee and laughter on a winter's night, to dinners for two and little adventures, to lives well lived and impossible accomplishments, to beautiful happiness and kisses at midnight, and most of all, to you . . .
thank you for coming along with me & wishing you a new year lost in love and the beauty of dreams,

A Yummy Appetizer: Brie with Fig Jam
New Year's typically means more gatherings and, yes, more food. One of my fave go-to appetizers is brie cheese with fig jam, crisps and walnuts. Not only is it delicious but totally easy to make, too.
I love Lesley Stowe Raincoast Crisps in the Rosemary Raisin Pecan flavour. The mix really goes great with the Brie, much better than regular crackers or plain bread (in my opinion!) I can't remember the exact name of the fig jam I use but for those who are local it has an orange top and is available at Longo's (usually in the cheese section or with the other jams).
To make the appetizer I just cut the wheel of brie in half and coat liberally with jam. Then I bake it at about 325 for 5 to 8 minutes in the oven or just put it in the microwave for 1-2 minutes. When the insides are melted and oozing slightly I remove the brie and top it with more jam and crushed walnuts. I serve on a dish with fun spreaders and surrounded by the crisps. The brie is great with wine too and has always been a hit when served. What's your go-to appetizer?
Wishing all of you a very safe and happy
New Year's Eve! xoxo

Au Revoir 2010
This year has seemed to have flown by! From staying alone in Warsaw last year, unable to be close to any friends and family...to this year living my dream and snagging a party to watch the ball drop live in NYC... I must say words cannot properly express my elation over the past few months.
I think we're raised to be synical...dream big, but don't get your hopes up because all too often things are not what they seem. Normally this tactic works, as it shelters us from a whole array of disappointing outcomes, but every once and a while you will find yourself pleasantly surprised with sheer happiness. New York has been my surprise, since the days of dress up in my mother's high heels I have dreamed of being a New Yorker. I couldn't wait to prance across town hailing cabs and climbing career ladders... all in the highest of styles of course ;)
This city certainly hazes anyone who dares try to live here, but once you make it in, its absolutely fabulous. So this New Year's I have a bounty of greatness to celebrate. Dreams come true, home sweet home established, and new adventures to embark upon. My favorite thing about New Year's is the look back of the last year, and how many incredible changes can happen in just 365 days. I am sure 2011 will bring about some changes of its own and personally cannot wait set out on the next 365 adventure!

{table for two: crab bruschetta}
. . . this week's table for two is a beautiful {& stunningly delicious!} starter made by p over the holiday weekend, crab bruschetta, from donna hay's seasons -- the subtle tastes and textures were exquisite . . .
{crab bruschetta}
4 thin slices sourdough bread
olive oil, for brushing
2 tablespoons whole-egg mayonnaise
2 tablespoons lime juice
2 teaspoons finely grated lime rind
sea salt and cracked black pepper
400g cooked crab meat
1 large mild green chilli, sliced
2 green onions (scallions), sliced
lime wedges, to serve
Preheat the oven to 180°C (355°F). Brush the oil and place on a baking tray. Cook for 2-3 minutes or until crispy and golden. Set aside. Place the mayonnaise, lime juice and rind, salt and pepper in a bowl and whisk well to combine. Add the crab and toss to combine. Spoon the crab mixture onto the bread, top with the chilli and green onion and serve with the lime. Serves 4.

Those Dancing Flappers
This archive video features some stunning dance routines from the 1920's like the Charleston and Black Bottom dance. This was the disco dancing of that era. These social dances were essentially Jazz dances.
Another favourite of this blog is this video by Aaron1912 of Youtube.His channel is possibly the best resource for all things 1920's !

Love of Gloves
My dearest friend gave me such a great Christmas present- a vintage fashion pamphlet entitled 'Gloves: Fashion & Etiquette,' circa 1961. I adore it. I have now learned I should never appear in public without gloves, never eat, drink or smoke with gloves on, or make a habit of carrying my gloves as "they should be considered an integral part of you costume." Isn't it interesting how times change?
Gloves then:
(then again, some things DON'T change.)
All is not lost for us modern sophisticates, though! The past season or so gloves have made their way back in the spotlight. From short wrist lengths to full lengths reaching almost to one's shoulder, there is a glove out there for everyone!
Gloves for today:
Talk about a modern-day Joan! I DIE over these (also, she makes me want to dye my hair a pretty shade of crimson...). My etiquette pamphlet informed me that the only appropriate accessories to wear with gloves are bracelets. Agreed, 1961, agreed.

And the ultimate glove-wearer of modern times? Sarah Jessica Parker, of course! Sigh....
So what do you think? Would you be daring enough to sport some ladylike gloves in this day and age?
